Courmayeur Ski Resort

The Italian ski resort of Courmayeur is at the foot of the 4,808-metre-high Mont Blanc, which is the highest mountain in the Alps. It has a ski area encompassing over 40km of pisted slopes. Courmayeur is a charming medieval resort that extends a warm Italian welcome. The skiing in Courmayeur offers excellent conditions thanks to the high altitude, with pistes above 2,500 metres.

Courmayeur can be reached in just 90 minutes from Geneva airport, making the ski resort a very attractive weekend ski destination. The Mont Blanc tunnel also makes day trips from here to Chamonix very feasible.

There is something for everyone in Courmayeur ski resort making it a particularly good choice for families and groups with mixed skiing abilities. There are green runs, wide cruisy blues as well as challenging black runs and off-piste. Particularly those accessed via Entreves, which include the Italian version of the Vallee Blanche and the Toula glacier.

The centre of Courmayeur, which was originally a medieval market town, is a cosy collection of narrow streets, some of which are for pedestrians only. Courmayeur comes alive in the evenings as glamorous Italians walk between boutique shops, vibrant bars and restaurants.

Courmayeur ski resort is in the Aosta Valley ski area. Neighbouring ski resorts include Cervinia that is linked with Zermatt in Switzerland. As well as Pila and La Thuile, linked with La Rosière in France. These Italian ski resorts are all skiable with the Aosta Valley Skipass. Plan Checrouit is the main base of Courmayeur ski resort. The front of the skiing area benefits from the sunshine in the mornings, but in the afternoons skiers can move over into the Val Veny side and ski many of the runs through the trees found here.

With 11 blue runs, 17 reds, five blacks and some epic off-piste, intermediates can improve and develop their style in Courmayeur ski resort, while advanced skiers can find slopes to test themselves on. Courmayeur skiing is especially good for intermediates, with brilliant red runs located across the Plan Checrouit and Monte Bianco areas. There is also a generous amount of off-piste skiing for the more advanced skiers in the group. Beginners will also be able to learn, with a number of moving carpet lifts and gentle slopes to ease them in.

Although there is terrain for all boarders, Courmayeur ski resort is best suited to freeriders, carvers and beginners with its off-piste, tree-lined areas and wide, groomed slopes. Between the wide blue runs and off-piste, snowboarders can also find snow parks with jumps and features.There is also a terrain park by the Aretu Chair-lift with jumps and a giant airbag. Off the side of the blue runs, boarders will find nooks, crannies and chutes to jib and descend.

Courmayeur ski resort is well geared to cater for non-skiers. The old village itself is very attractive and its streets are lined with shops, bars and cafes. It is very easy for non-skiers to go up to Plan Checrouit to meet skiing friends and family for lunch. There are some pleasant walks along the valley floor, not to mention excursions to Aosta. Day-trips to Chamonix, on the French side of the Mont Blanc tunnel, are also an option.
