The lovely village of Grindelwald is a charming, picturesque Swiss ski resort situated at the base of the Jungfrau ski region. Overlooking the north face of The Eiger, visitors can enjoy some of the Alps’ most stunning panoramic views. Grindelwald ski resort is steeped in mountaineering history; the traditional character of which can be felt in the alpine chalet-style buildings and charming cog railway station.

The well-known neighbouring ski resorts of Wengen and Mürren are directly accessible from Grindelwald, providing plenty of further skiing opportunities. These legendary landscapes have attracted mountaineers for many years, and a visit to Grindelwald is sure to be made by its stupendous views across the Swiss plains.

Grindelwald skiing is mainly suited to intermediate skiers with lots of blues and easy reds to progress on. The V-cableway are two lifts that transport skiers and snowboarders to the Eiger Glacier and the Männlichen in style. Recent investment has seen upgrades making the lifts quick and comfortable.

Off the slopes, Grindelwald boasts Europe’s longest sledging run and an extensive network of mountain walking trails. There’s also a great mixture of classy restaurants and lively bars. There’s really good nightlife for a small ski town with some great options available.

Ski Areas in Grindelwald

Known for its diverse slopes, Grindelwald is an ideal ski destination for everyone from beginners right through to the experienced skier. With 224km of slopes served by a fleet of increasingly modern lifts, you will have plenty to explore. Those who wish to go further afield can take the trails and lifts to Wengen to explore the shared ski area of Kleine Scheidegg; whilst both Mürren and Wengen additionally connect to further smaller ski areas.

The skiing in Grindelwald is ideal for a family ski holiday, as beginners will enjoy the gentle Bodmi slopes whilst intermediates can take advantage of the mass of red and blue runs which make up most of the ski resort’s terrain. A fantastic five-mile cruiser runs from the top of the Oberjoch chairlift back to the base of resort. Whilst Grindelwald is not commonly regarded for tougher skiing, there are some worthy off-piste exceptions in the Jungfraujoch region, as well as a few itineraries around the Oberjoch lift.

Grindelwald’s large number of long winding paths may not be suited to total beginners, however boarders with a little more experience will enjoy the masses of wide open pistes and the snowpark in the Oberjoch ski area. Some steep off-piste runs in the Schreckfeld area are great for freeriders, and these can be accessed via a gondola ride from Grindelwald.

The Grindelwald Ski School offers a Snowli Children’s Club on the Bodmi nursery slopes, in the middle of the ski paradise bodmiARENA. Select either a lunchtime or afternoon care package, which includes lunch, freshly baked treats and entertainment. The Kinderhort Sunshine Crèche will look after non-skiing infants aged one month to eight years old and is based at the top of Männlichen. The Felix Ski Paradies is a specialist ski school offering lessons for children.

When it comes to mountain restaurants, Grindelwald has over 20 options spread out across the First and Männlichen sectors. Small Alpine huts offer simple, self-service fayre, whilst a large complex at the top of Männlichen offers more upmarket cuisine with table service. In the town itself, there are over 50 dining options, the majority of which are located within the larger hotels. The Cava Cellar in the Hotel Derby serves cosy raclette until midnight which you can enjoy before or after a toboggan run.

Of the main Jungfrau ski region villages, Grindelwald boasts the most bars and nightlife. Most of the action happens in hotel bars, for example, the Espresso Bar in the Hotel Spinne which has a friendly atmosphere and is the ideal meeting spot after a day’s skiing. The Gepsi Bar in Hotel Eiger has a more relaxed vibe with live music. Two of the town’s main nightclubs are the Mescalero at the Hotel Spinne and the Plaza at Hotel Sunstar.

Grindelwald offers a range of winter sports including sledging and snowshoeing, which are particularly popular. The fantastic, dramatic scenery can also be enjoyed by all, with the option to take the mountain railway up to a cosy Alpine hut to sample local cuisine and wonderful views. Separate lift passes are available for non-skiers which provide access to a wide range of hiking trails and toboggan runs, or the nearby town of Interlaken where there is plenty of shopping.
